KATIE HOLMES IS CHANNELING PENNY LANE --WITH AN AMEX BLACK CARD

What happens to Penny Lane after she leaves Morocco? Katie Holmes is giving us some ideas. Today, the actor—who is currently starring in a Broadway production of Our Town—was spotted out in New York dressed like the grown-up version of everyone’s favorite “band aid,” albeit with a little more cash to spare.
Holmes bundled up for the blustery day in a sumptuous black leather coat from Kuzyk, lined with a thick, off-white shearling.
The coat, with a price tag just shy of $5,000, probably wasn’t in the Almost Famous heroine’s budget. But Katie Holmes’s cozy, slightly funky look is exactly how we’d imagine Penny Lane would dress today—aided by her Amex black card of course.

I NEED KATIE HOLMES LUDICROUSLY OVERSIZE SHEARLING COAT

This Wednesday, the actor and director was seen out and about in Manhattan looking all bundled up. The star of her outfit was a massive black-and-white shearling coat that she wrapped around herself like a warm hug, cacooning into the ample hood.
The reversible coat, crafted from glazed shearling lambskin and featuring deep patchwork pockets, hails from New York City-based brand Kuzyk.
Led by designer Elizabeth Kuzyk, the boutique, eco-conscious label offers luxurious vintage-inspired pieces made in the U.S. for the elegant, cool woman.
SPOTLIGHT ON KUZYK

Since emerging label Kuzyk launched in 2019, founder and designer Elizabeth Kuzyk has been carving out a niche space in the market with
her vintage- inspired, finely crafted, luxe-meets-cool wardrobe mainstays.
“We create vintage heirlooms that never existed — but should have. Each piece is created with an intention. Focusing on less product and curating a timeless, empowering wardrobe. Each piece is designed for a particular muse,” the designer told WWD. For spring, the designer continued to tap into rock ‘n’ roll and luxe, vintage styles through fashions designed for her muse of the season: Whitney Houston.

KUZYK LANDS AT MODA OPERANDI

“Last Fall, we came across Kuzyk in downtown Manhattan and fell in love with designer Elizabeth Kuzyk’s aesthetic and forte for vintage meets must-have. The collection is mused by rock ‘n’ roll, yet timeless in every way. After trying on two jackets it was clear we had found a brand our customer needed to know about. From sourcing deadstock materials to providing scrap materials with a second life, Kuzyk’s production is done thoughtfully, manufactured in the United States,” said Moda Operandi buyer Kelsey Lyle.

“We are very discerning when it comes to partnering with retailers, but our ethos aligns with Moda Operandi. I got to know the team at Moda and it just made sense —Moda’s collector clientele has incredibly discerning taste and standards. Personally, I believe in carefully curated wardrobes and I am discerning when I make a new piece. I don’t make pieces just for the sake of ‘new stuff,’ it needs to serve a purpose,” said Kuzyk, adding the partnership is a big step forward for her label, which launched in 2019.

Since her brand’s inception, Kuzyk has homed in on designing specialty, vintage-inspired pieces.

Highlights of the trunk show’s assortment include an expanded range of strong outerwear, ranging from a Debaun suede kimono (based off a kimono from the 1800s in South China that was given to Kuzyk by archive dealer Bob Melet) to a reversible shearling lambskin Fort Coat with enveloping hood and deadstock washed lambskin Rose hoodie. Kuzyk’s outerwear is accompanied by a boxy, relaxed white T-shirt and a select number of bottoms, including a pleated deadstock leather basketball shirt and two skirts. “A rock ‘n’ roll twist on high-end, quality, everyday pieces. Each piece always has the same intention: to be the timeless treasure in your wardrobe, inspire confidence and become an essential part of your lifestyle,” said Kuzyk.

STYLE DIARIES WITH ELIZABETH KUZYK

This week, we follow Elizabeth Kuzyk, of her eponymous label Kuzyk, as she bounces from atelier to client meeting to workout class. As a designer, Kuzyk swears by interesting pieces to create laidback (read: minimal effort) ensembles with a touch of Parisian glamour and rock 'n roll.

“I like the shabby, worn feel of The Smith Patchwork Coat. It feels like a cool alternative to a blazer. I wear it the way I would a blazer: fold it over, roll up the sleeves. The minimalism without the hardware and the trim add an effortless elegance. The waxy brown nubuck is insane; it’s so good. I am so picky with how a T-shirt fits. I often stretch the neck and roll the sleeves. So I had to make my own. We hosted a lunch for private clients so I selected our Smith Straight Leg Trousers to match the coat. It’s a good look—cool, at ease. I imagine David Bowie wearing it. I added some vintage cowboy boots underneath. I feel like me in this look. It’s a rock 'n roll take on a power suit.”

. My favorite pieces can all fit in a suitcase and whatever I grab can work together. I design with that same intention. When it comes to workouts (or anytime really), I like to dress like a French girl—simple, cool, at ease. The hair bows help.”

What role does fashion play in your life? How does it serve you?

"For me, style is whatever makes me feel more myself. I see clothing as a tool. I can choose to put on tools that make me feel confident, cool, at ease, or empowered.’ And for my work, I build those tools."

KUZYK INTRODUCES KNITS

New York-based designer Elizabeth Kuzyk’s namesake ready-to-wear label has expanded with the launch of knitwear. “ The brand’s signature cool-girl wardrobe pieces expand to an ‘off duty’ knit uniform designed to live in,” the emerging designer told WWD. ”Something to wear underneath our hero pieces. Since COVID-19, I have watched lifestyles change and I am not telling anyone to take off their cozy pants. I wanted to make knit uniforms that felt like they were discovered from the Paris flea market — and that’s what we did.”

She added that the collection is all about the details, such as lace trims on sleeves, and was inspired by vintage knits and French archive pieces the designer collected over the years. “From there I looked at the designs in my closet that get the most wear — functional design like Adidas track pants or the perfect men’s crewneck. I transformed these into a lightweight, cashmere cotton blend (machine washable) fine rib and didn’t hold back on details like the stitching and trims that brought an element of vintage lingerie.”

The line also extends into mix-and-match layers such as a long skirt with matching bralette or tank, and slouchy T-shirt and miniskirt. Each style was made in Queens, N.Y., plays into the brand’s DNA of offering “vintage heirlooms,” and can easily be styled back with the designer’s leather outerwear.

THE LAUNCH: KUZYK KNITS

Elizabeth Kuzyk started her label with the intention of making dressing a transformative act, something to make you feel empowered and get you through the day.
